st teresa: william james' shadow ?

in 'the varieties of religious experience' i was surprised to read james say of saint teresa:

"apart from helping younger nuns .. by the inspiration of her example and instruction .. there is absolutely no human use in her"

as if inspiring others has little value

and i detected a jealousy in the putdown of the  "endless amatory flirtation .. between the devotee and the deity"

don't get me wrong i love willliam james and the book but this is .. after all .. the seventh circle Wink [;)]

Isn't there a beauty in the release of her (Teresa) by James. I haven't read those lines in context yet, but perhaps there is a clarity of seeing in it. Perhaps it did follow attachment to the deity but is not the simplicity, the stillnness, the release and the beauty of what she is. There is something profound in "absolutely no human  use in her" for me. Should I read the passage or the book in context?
