I am simply curious as to what the points mean, what the purpose of them are, and who decides or how it is decided how many points are given to each post.

If this question is in the wrong forum, an admin can move it or I can move it.

well then. my guess is that each gets 5 points when posted, and that each time a person replies to that post, 15 points are added. thus the common numbers of 5, 20, 35, 50, etc..

But hey, once long ago, we were entitled to grade each post from A to D.  That also contributed to the points.  Christian conservatives would end up with negative points, get mad and never be heard from again...  So the controversy was partially abated.  The points are there to feed our narcissistic red selves. :)
