Tired of Sleeping - Suzanne Vega

Oh Mom, the dreams are not so bad
It's just that there's so much to do
    And I'm tired of sleeping

Oh Mom, the old man is telling me something
His eyes are wide and his mouth is thin
And I just can't hear what he's saying

Oh Mom, I wonder when I'll be waking
It's just that there's so much to do
    And I'm tired of sleeping

Oh Mom, the kids are playing in pennies
They're up to their knees in money
And the dirt of the churchyard steps

Oh Mom, that man he ripped out his lining
He tore out a piece of his body
To show us his "clean quilted heart"

Oh Mom, I wonder when I'll be waking
It's just that there's so much to do
    And I'm tired of sleeping

Oh Mom, the bird on the string is hanging
Her bones are twisting and dancing
She's fighting for her small life

Oh Mom, I wonder when I'll be waking
It's just that there's so much to do
    And I'm tired of sleeping

Oh Mom, I wonder when I'll be waking
It's just that there's so much to do
    And I'm tired of sleeping

    Schalk:

You are right, of course, when you say the 'Texas Lightning' song is just a pop song with a country attitude to it. Obviously Hank Williams is more country than they'll ever be, but it's still a great song imo. The band took part in the Eurovision song contest in 2006 and they ranked 15th, which is quite remarkable. I'm not too deep into country (it's just not my generation, you know), but I like the overall atmosphere it creates and I'm able to enjoy this kind of music. I like Johnny Cash for example. So thanks for introducing Hank Williams to me, I always like to hear music I'm not yet familiar with.

    Arthur:

Wow, must have been a long night, eh? ;-) Well first of all thanks for sharing.

Hmm, well, that's a lot of output you created. I don't feel in the position to judge your series of clips. Anybody who feels like commenting is welcome. : )

Let me share some subjecitve impressions quand meme:

    - Aha, so that's Bruce Cockburn. Finally I know where that quote is coming from.

    - Laurie Anderson: that's kind of a political song, right? Hehe, so what happens when there is no expert around to see the problem? Would we be forced to think for ourselves? Oh mah gawd. :-) But then I'm getting a bitter vibe from her and I don't like that part. Smells like self-righteous indignation if you ask me.

-Björk: All is full of love...La la la la la

-Tool: Amazing clip and music. Alex Grey's artwork fits perfectly with their music. Great stuff with the power to lift you up in heights you didn't even think was possible. BUT... it's the same problem with Tool and Alex Grey: one day they boost you into the universe and the next day it just doesn't work anymore. There is no path to follow, they leave you with nothing in the end. It's kinda like your favorite erotic fantasy: it thrills you to no end, but then one day you wake up and the thrill is gone. That's why I think both Alex Grey and Tool are slightly overrated.

-XTC: I like it. Atheism is no crime! (yet)

-Suzanne Vega: O yeah, that's the good stuff from the eighties. She's sexy and she don't care about it. Very cool. Where are all these women today? Tell me, where did they go?

These statements reflect my personal opinion. Feel free to comment, argue, or worship. I like music, but I'm no expert (sic) and I'm no art critic, too. Hey, what do you expect from someone who played in a german Blaskapelle as a kid?

    have a good time, y'all

Thanks for the impressions.  I was goofing off, digging music and sharing some of it.  Hold it in your consciousness however you like.  Big Smile [:D]

    Flower of a Zero
    - Stuart Davis

    What’s to see
    see but the secret
    Crystal balls
    sit in our sockets

    What’s to feel
    feel but the presence
    Plasma pods
    stuffed in our circuits

    Steep it, cook it
    Love is an oven
    A couple ones
    can get you eleven

    Shake it, cut it
    open the vessel
    A couple wounds
    can give you a vineyard

What’s another bruise in the belly?
Can’t you take a punch like a lover?
Don’t you wanna dance in the gutter?
For the flower of a zero

What’s another spike in the muscle
To a couple kids in the riddle?
Poppin’ out of hell as the petals
From the flower of a zero
    The flower of a zero

    Daddy’s been
    polishing his pistol

    While Mother grins
    fingering her bible

    Sister’s stuck
    under an uncle

    Brother binges
    in the basement

    Shakin’ shadows
    out of the mortals
    Duke it out
    till the devils are dizzy

    Breaking knuckles
    climbing the spiral
    Diggin’ jewels
    outta’ the jungle

What’s another bruise in the belly
can’t you take a punch like a lover?
Don’t you wanna bleed like a mother?
For the flower of a zero

What’s another spike in the muscle
to a couple twins in the riddle?
Poppin’ out of hell as the petals
From the flower of a zero

    Flower of a zero

Baby why do we do this?
    We’ve already been through this
    We’re all Jesus and Judas
    especially the Buddhists

But I keep feeding the fantasy
    God, I’d love a lobotomy
    Before I murder the mystery
I need you to lift me
    Above
    all the shit I’ve learned
    give me the gift
    without a word
    The flower of a zero

    Better
    forget about halos
    Better
    forget about heros

    Ever an enso,
    show me a zero

What’s another bruise in the belly?
Can’t you take a punch like a lover?
Don’t you wanna groove in the gutter?
For the flower of a zero

What’s another spike in the muscle
to a couple twins in the riddle?
There’s nobody here but the petals
from the flower of a zero

    Witz:

Yeah, Hank Williams is like the Plato of country music. Johnny Cash would be Schopenhauer.

I was in Vienna last year. We were at Prater Park re-living my childhood. I stopped in a little store and on the spur of the moment bought a 3 CD set of Tyrolean Folk Music. There are a couple of songs in there that I cannot stop listening to.

The Mexican Norteno sound (including TexMex) is essentially the grandchild of German and Austrian Volk music. The accordions and the oom-pah oom-pah beat are critical.

I have really lamented the introduction of the disco sound with glitzy surfacey shimmery skittery vapidity. That sound was appropriate for an era that was self-referential and slick (70s). But it infected pop music and took the young soul away from pop. I heard a lot of that slick, tweaked up, disco-ey pop sound in Europe recently. I wish it were not so, but I guess it is what it is.

(There is something that seems viscerally improper about using musical form to voice what is essentially cognitivie ranting. She could have achieved a better effect by honestly portraying the voice of someone who does think for themselves, instead of going on and on in what is a "snide" tone.)

-Björk: All is full of love...La la la la la

(Bjork is like incense for me, the smell is OK for a short while, but then it can get sickening and you definitely can't get nourishment from it.)

-Suzanne Vega: O yeah, that's the good stuff from the eighties. She's sexy and she don't care about it. Very cool. Where are all these women today? Tell me, where did they go?

(The prevailing model for a woman today is to be a "boy" with "boobs." Angelina Jolie. The yin-yang circle is turning. Brad Pitt will be wearing make-up soon and acting very gentle.)

Hey, what do you expect from someone who played in a german Blaskapelle as a kid?

(Can't knock brass combos. I played a baritone for several years, as well. To do it right and to break the glass of the soul and make the liquid flow you need to approach it with really tight passion (spiritual attitude - Wilber definition #4). Otherwise, it turns into a big rollicking pile of mud. A lot of metal bands could use some training in Blaskapelle.)

O thank you Schalk. I was pretty sure that you would like it xxDD. Im happy to see that we share the same sense of humor...I appreciate that. (Although I felt not only laughter and lightness when I wrote the original post). Yeah you sure can watch truth, goodness and beauty all gush forth and trip on the carpet - ROTFL ... ahem, OK this may be not everybody's humor. Apologies.

Re: Random video clips for no particular reason

Um.  For what it's worth, a lot of folks consider it good netiquette to note that a link is "not work safe," or however you want to put it, if the link goes to something like a video clip of an ejaculating penis.

It did amusingly defy my expectations - I was actually expecting to see the "Flying Bag" scene from American Beauty.

"That's the day that I realized that there was this entire life behind things, and this incredibly benevolent force that wanted me to know that there was no reason to be afraid - ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know, but it helps me remember...sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in."

Re: Random video clips for no particular reason

    Welcome Arthur,

well yes you may be right, I should have given a warning. But then the surprise is part of the fun, ain't it? And imo everybody should know what a penis looks like, just in case we encounter one in real life :-) It sure can do no harm to watch a health-care educational video about basic features of the human body, right? But okay next time I post something that could be seen as disgusting, I'll make sure I mark it with "Do not watch this if you don't want your feelings hurt" or something like that. How does 'South Park' do it? I believe they say: 'Nobody should watch the following scenes. Thank you.'

@vulgan: No it's not me. Mine looks slightly different ^ ^ Have a nice holiday! Smile [:)]

And don't forget: "Guns are good. The Penis is evil." (ZARDOZ)
