    Bill Harris and 'The Secret'

    Dear all,

I see that Bill Harris has disavowed his childish affiliations with the magical-animistic element of the 'Secret'. 'Bout time too, if you ask me.

I found out via an e-mail I received after registering for the free course www.masteringthepowerofnow.com. He says he still believes in the 'manifest your own reality' bit but not the 'airy fairy magical thinking part'.

It's nice to know that things do eventually change.

    Bye for now,

    Dan.

    Dan:

What do you think Bill really believes "manifest your own reality" means?

What was the airy fairy part that he has disavowed?

I think he heard Ken Wilber say something critical about the airy fairy part of the "Secret" and has decided that to maintain his marketing campaign within Integral circles he needs to "leave us with the impression that" he has come around to the position of Ken Wilber on the airy fairy part.

Of course, the point is to "leave the impression" without being concerned about what is or is not true or good.

(Insert tap dancing music here with light high hat ...)

    FF:

My concern is distinguishing what Bill "truly agrees with" and what he wants us to be left with as a perception of what he purportedly agrees with.

This is the problem that emerges when we join the "make an impression" parade.

This is the dignity I speak of owning - being trusted implicitly to sincerely tell the truth to the best one knows it. We lose that when we join the marketplace and become marketeers.

don't know bill very well .. but regarding marketeers .. there are many who believe in their product .. and who speak the truth .. for example .. tami simon . . .

Re: Bill Harris and 'The Secret'

Yeah, but that is not the sense of "marketeer" I was talking about, right?

I was talking about those whose overriding goal is to capture markets and in doing so are willing to fudge and dodge and speak half-truths and bullshit me.

I think you are overlooking one central part, Schalk, which is that Harris is not targeting merely Integral thinkers in his www.masteringthepowerofnow.com campaign.

Re: Bill Harris and 'The Secret'

The first interview on Mastering the Power of Now with Genpo Roshi is excellent, and very useful, and does indeed speak to a sense that Bill Harris, for his part, has dropped some of the more problematic aspects of The Secret, while still speaking to the partial truth it recognizes, simply because so many people seem to relate to it, for all its flaws.

Well that's quite an eloquent appraisal of the situation, Fangsz and I think you're right.

It's gratifying to see that people mostly concur with my overall stance, too ;-) Quite a relief.

I found that I was not willing to have that much paper come in my mail box and would never be willing to read it.  It became very annoying to hear from his marketing voice.  And yet, I got a lot out of the first CD's I ordered.  I  do not know how people keep that up.   Must be money.   PTG

It is also telling to go on Amazon.co.uk and look at the very consistent one-star reviews that it has been receiving for months on end now.

The one-stars are rapidly usurping the five stars, which were in the great majority awarded when the book first came out, and now the most recent ones acknowledge the book hasn't worked.

The distressing thing is that the book is really harmful and I'm glad I never took an interest in it.

Re: Bill Harris and 'The Secret'

That is very good news.  I guess when one does not get the new car or job or significant other,  people just go back to wherever they started.  Among other things, it is just so shallow after filling up on the good stuff.  (And the Good, True and Beautiful takes a whole different kind of Thinking.   Can't walk away from it either.

PS  And as Tami Simon says on the dialoug with KW,  the bullshit detector just knows not to even pick up a book like the Secret after exploration of what we are really after.   I am still grateful for that and for all the people who helped me go in that direction.   Pattye

Re: Bill Harris and 'The Secret'

Is not the finite relative realm itself not but bullshit. To me it has to be put together like that in order to come from your Infinite Self. Even Ken himself admits the 4 quadrants is a map of samsara. The whole point is to transcend the map , and know " I is not me , it is something that shows up for ME"  Once that is gotton , go play the game , just because you as SELF chooses to play the game.  The SELF can play the Secret game as well as the Integral game as well as the Catholic game ect. ect. Its all a game.  An epistomolgy based on what you dont know all ready exist.  Like you dont know you put the secret together , like you put the universe together and deny ownership. You dont get enlightenment out of life, you bring enlightment into life. Coming from SELF one can get value from reading the Secret, as well get value from reading Ken, as well as get value from reading the telephone directory, cause value is a function of the SELF.

Re: Bill Harris and 'The Secret'

Hi Bill, just to poke around a bit, do you ever prefer one game over another, such as the game of Self?

To put the question another way, how do you actually act?  Why the pattern in how you act?
