    Re: 1st Biennial Integral Theory Conference - Who's Going?

    Oh, and interestingly, they are offering MP3's of the entire conference proceedings:

    Pre-Order MP3 Conference Recordings:
    Conference attendees will now have the option to pre-order–at the time of registration–a set of MP3s of the proceedings for $99.

    • Include all 100 individual presentations and the 12 panel discussions
    • Approximately 130 hours of integral content
    • Have a permanent record of the presentations that you attend as well as all the outstanding presentations that you will miss.
    • Overall, you'll have enough content to last you until the next conference.

    Order a set of these MP3s if you don't want to miss anything!

    ~~~
    So even if people aren't going, they could geek out on 130 hours of integral content.
    Re: 1st Biennial Integral Theory Conference - Who's Going?
    Actually, at this point it looks like you can only get the MP3s if you register for the conference itself - or at any rate you can only pre-order them under those circumstances.  I wonder if Integral Institute is only going to offer the MP3s to people who are going to attend the conference, or if they will be more widely available?
    Even if the MP3's are made available to non-conference attendees, I doubt I'll be able to easily afford them anytime soon - so it would be great if someone felt like lending their copies to me.  Smile [:)]
    hey arthur!
    i don't know about sacramento but the public libraries in my area are pretty good about making available items that don't have mass appeal. i don't see why that wouldn't include MP3s. of course, the recession we're now in could upset more than just this apple cart.
    Hi Ralph
    It seems unlikely to me that such specialized academic material would be offered in a public library, but it's worth a shot - if, that is, the MP3 conference recordings will be available to non-attendees, which we don't know yet.
    Library systems have an "Interlibrary loan" (ILL) system that is great for getting material from other libraries if it's not available in one's own.  In Canada audiovisual material wasn't available through ILL, but perhaps in the U.S.A. or other countries such material can be ordered.
    Most libraries also have a suggested purchase form  It's worth noting that if multiple people suggest purchase of the same material, a library is much more likely to get it.  Also, the more times an item is borrowed, the more likely it will stay in the system, as well as more likely that additional copies or related material will be ordered - so get together with some geeky friends and game the system in the service of integral consciousness Big Smile [:D].
    Ralph, has your library been good about getting material of a specifically integral nature?  And does that include non-written material?  (Also, are you talking about your library purchasing such material for their own collection, or getting it for patrons through the ILL system?)
    When I worked at the Vancouver Public Library, I used to place requests for integral material (as a regular patron - I wasn't directly involved in book ordering) and encourage other integrally-informed people to do the same.  Also, the last year I was there I finally managed to get an integral presentation into the staff conference (presented by my friend Jason Hughes, an integrally-informed naturopath).
    Encouraging libraries to carry integral material is a good way to help spread the word - and in the case of material by Ken Wilber or others associated with Integral Institute, it also helps raise the profile of I-I.  The more stuff that's on the shelves, the more likely that people will stumble upon it.
    cheers,
    Arthur
    Re: 1st Biennial Integral Theory Conference - Who's Going?
    Yep, Adastra, I'm thinking right now that I'll probably go.
    Do you know if Ken will be the keynote speaker of some sort or present at some plenary session? I notice a Barbara Dossey as a presenter - Larry Dossey who I've heard speak is her husband - neat.
    Not a big deal but do you happen to know if the mp3s will be substantially more if bought afterwards?
    As always at these big conferences, the problem becomes which presentations to sign up for when you want to see a lot - I guess, hence the mp3s.
     Hi Ambo
    Great to hear that you are probably going!  As for your other questions, I have no idea what the answers are - I only know what's on the website I linked to; perhaps someone at Integral Institute would be able to answer them.
    Because of Ken's illness, I don't think he travels much, so it seems very unlikely that he would be there in person, although perhaps he will have some kind of "remote presence" set up - mediated by technology and/or subtle energies.  Big Smile [:D]
    Oh, and by the way, Liz and I live about a 2 hour drive from San Francisco and like to take day trips into the city occasionally, so it may be possible to meet us for tea and AQALchat™ - if that interests you send me a PM.  August is a pretty crazy month for us, and very up in the air, so I'm not sure if we'll even be here when the conference happens.
    cheers,
    My friend Shane and I were planning on making it. There's a weekend at Esalen too, about a week after that. We thought we might hit both. We're hoping to meet more people in the integral community in California, any tips. Hope this finds you well. Jared
    hi arthur,
    just after posting that last message to you i remembered you had been a librarian in vancouver bc not too long ago, and would know alot more about what's possible with libraries than i Embarrassed [:$] i just know that the portland and washington county (sw of portland) library systems have been doing a great job making material like this available to the public. my fear is that the public is not always that appreciative and there could be a taxpayer revolt at some point a la jarvis-in-california. people can get really touchy if they think their money is being used in ways they don't like.
    my experience with libraries here is that if they don't feel they can afford something, then they'll do whatever they can to get it through ILL, which includes most colleges and universities. i imagine that will include MP3s, although i haven't yet checked this out.
    In Canada only written materials are available through ILL.
    If someone wanted to donate such materials to a public library, to make them more available and increase the profile of I-I and the integral worldview, it wouldn't use public money.  In that case, it would be best to check with a librarian first.  Otherwise - judging by the way it worked in Vancouver - if you donate something the librarians might decide not to incorporate it into the collection, in which case it'll end up being sold in a library book sale.
    cheers,
    Arthur
    The Find/Start a Local Group section of the 'plex shows some possible avenues of exploration.
    That page links to http://www.gaia.com/community/, which may be very helpful for networking (works for me), and also to kenwilbermeetup.com,  which is a really promising avenue for exploration if you're looking for integral people in your local area.
    If you are going to be passing through the Sacramento area or nearby sometime, send me a message and if it's possible I'll meet you for tea and chat.  You may also be interested to know that a (so far tiny) Sacramento Integral group has just formed - we just had our first meeting a little over a week ago.
    fantastic! it wasn't that long ago that americans flocked to europe, but that's gotta be changing, given the way the dollar is going down the toilet. i certainly look forward to the three of you and others as well--how about grey?--coming. maybe the question will be how many americans can make it to the bay area to join you, with only measely dollars to get us there.
    good point, arthur. if that's also the case in the U.S., then i imagine I-I will eventually publish this. we'll just have to be patient.
    So you're coming as well, Ralph? Cool.
    The dollar is indeed very very weak; on the other hand, that makes flights more expensive. It's still a good deal though, if you have European currency.
